William

My work consists of one of a kind pieces of furniture that are either sculptural or functional, ideally both. I attempt to incorporate new techniques, processes and forms into existing furniture archetypes. I work with techniques such as steam bending, heat bending, bent laminations and kerf bending. I use these techniques as a way to discover new structural configurations rather than as decoration. I believe a piece of furniture should look the way it does because of its function and construction and not because of its decoration. In most cases I use traditional joinery techniques with improvisations to suit their specific applications. My vision or rationale for the furniture I make is to undermine the preconceived notion of form surrounding furniture. To have people question and re-examine something they have always accepted as the norm. When you start to examine things you have been surrounded with your entire life but have taken for granted, you start to see the complexity and character of all things. Furniture as a craft is symbiotic with humanity, acting as a temporary prosthetic skeleton, supporting us. Furniture therefore must be the most accurate objective reflection of ourselves and our lives. My hope is that through the use of unusual form and technique in furniture, I can help people re-examine furniture, themselves and all things.

Frank De Jong

Born in Ontario in 1977 Frank was introduced to art by his grandmother, a painter and by his mother a wood refinisher. Growing up he became usedto the sights and sounds of renovations as his parents worked on 'turning' houses, and the skills he learned during those years would later help him in his future projects.

During his spare time he was always interested in creating and reworking things like old furniture, lamps and textiles. This proved to be a creative outlet for him. In 2006 he enrolled at Sheridan College of Art and Design in the Crafts and Design program.

Although he enjoyed the chance to work in other studios, the furniture studio was clearly his passion. It was through the exploration of materials and mediums that he developed an innovative approach to traditional concepts. Playing on the phrase 'what was once old is new again' Frank transforms these traditions into conceptual ideas and adapts them into his own distinctive style.
